Bryony Shaw interviewed about the action on day one:
“I had really good board speed today, it was just a shame I was in third in the first place then actually capsized! I hit a wave and my front hand came off the boom and I just fell in, so that dropped me back to seventh.
In the second race again I was in the top three, I tacked onto port and a couple of girls tacked on top of me so I had really dirty air. I had to tack out a couple of times which is pretty costly on an RS:X. I managed to claw my way back to sixth which I am pretty happy with. My board speed is good as were my starts, so I am feeling pretty positive.
Yesterday I think I was set up a bit too underpowered for the conditions, whereas today felt a lot better. I feel confident now that I can be in the top three, I know that’s where I would have finished if it wasn’t for a couple of mistakes. In this level of fleet any mistake is really costly.
As I said my board speed is good, and that’s what it’s all about in the windsurfing really. I know if I keep chipping away and putting in solid results I can be top three at the end of the week.
Conditions are looking breezy over the next day or two, which should suit me. As I’ve shown today my planing speed is good, and the next few days will certainly be planing winds!
Our next races are in the harbour where we have the borders which we cannot go outside of, this restricts us quite a lot on our angles so it changes the game a little. We’ve got the strategy for that so I am excited for tomorrow. The bottom of the harbour, near the start line, can be quite choppy but once you get through this the water will be a lot flatter than it was today. A clean start will definitely be important, plus it will pay to point nice and high which suits my style.
It feels great to be back involved in the Olympics, I am gutted with the mistakes that I made today. But I know the way that I am sailing at the moment that I can actually get into the fight and really give it a go.”
